The Ball Chair originally designed by Eero Aarnio, or “Globe Chair” or “Sphere Chair” as its sometimes referred to was designed by Eero Aarnio using of the most simple geometric forms- the ball. Cutting off a part of it, and creating its own little world, a remarkable result was produced. The Ball chair is known as a “room within a room”. It creates a cool, relaxing atmosphere by blocking out the noise of the outside world, and creating your own world. Its great for having your own private space within a larger space. The Ball Chair does spin on its axis in order to give you a full view of everything around you.
In 1966, the Ball Chair was featured at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne. It was the most outstanding new product at the event as it quickly won international craze and fame, and became one of the most popular furniture designs and icons of the mid century. It was the start of a whole new line of fiberglass designs by Eero Aarnio.
About Eero Aarnio-Eero Aarnio (born 1932) is a Finnish interior designer, well known for his innovative furniture designs in the 1960s, notably his plastic and fiberglass chairs. Aarnio studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, and started his own office in 1962. The following year he introduced his Ball Chair, a hollow sphere on a stand, open on one side to allow a person to sit within. The similar Bubble Chair was clear and suspended from above. Aarnio's designs were an important aspect of 1960s popular culture (though his designs did not reflect this), and could often be seen as part of sets in period science-fiction films. Because his designs used very simple geometric forms, they were ideal for such productions.
